In general, I work from reference photographs of the person(s) or animal(s) to be featured in the portrait. Usually, if the subject(s) of the painting are geographically close to my studio, I will schedule a time to do the photography myself. If this is not possible or if the subject is not available (for example, deceased), then I can work with high quality photographs that you may have.
My portraits are painted on the highest quality linen canvas and archival oil paints which produces a painting that should last for centuries.
Pricing: The prices for my portraits depend upon
- the number of subjects included within the painting
- the amount of detail requested (for example, a head-and-shoulders painting is less complex and less expensive than one displaying a full body)
- and the size.
An illustrative price for a commissioned 9"x12" head-and-shoulders portrait of one human painted against a diffuse background is $400. The price for a 24"x30" portrait of the same person, but showing the full body and a very detailed background, is $1700.
Production time: I am currently working on a number of commissions. As a result, any new commission begun very soon would not be complete and ready for delivery for about 6 months.
